Name: Gaia
Purpose: The Gaia faction are a rather passive group. Their beliefs are rather simple: Protecting nature. Though they aren't a violent group, it is apparent their love for keeping nature the way it is, even if it has already been warped and mangled by man from their past mistakes. Striving to help preserve the earth, in what is left of it, the Gaia spreads their beliefs in passive ways, trying to educate those around them of the benefits of living off of the land, now re-shaping it.
Head Quarters: Moonlit Grove in The Sewer
Characteristics: Members of Gaia believe in co-existing with nature and their appearance matches such. Their hair is uncut, only kept at even lengths and often kept in braids as the children who are raised in the faction get older to maintain it so as not to have it stuck in the swamp-like area. Aside from that, another signifier comes from their clothing. Their clothing is made purely from nature. No metals, only cotton and silk clothing as no harm comes to animals to gather the materials. Other than those fibers, they also use preserved leaves, vines, anything that is abundant within nature.
Because they believe in no such distinction between one rank and another, they do not separate themselves by their clothing. They believe themselves as equal as the next, never having a thing like rank to pull on another member as it would promote the idea of someone being better than the other, or more worthy.
Caste: The caste system really is almost non-existent here. There is division of labor, those that create clothing, those that work crops and jobs along those lines. The only real distinction is that there is a leader among them, not so much seen in reverence, but a person who is a servant not only to the earth, but more so to his faction.
Chief: The chief is distinguished by his name. People of the faction acknowledge the leader as Chief, denoting his important, and his personal obligation, to helping the faction thrive. Everyone has responsibilities, yes, but the Chief is the one that everyone goes to. Everyone who has a question goes to him if it cannot be answered by simple means.
Children: If you are not the chief, you are addressed, officially, as children. You could be twenty years older or forty years older than the chief. You are still a child. There is no disrespect in the term, it is often rarely used unless in a ceremony of sorts. It is just how the people are addressed to resemble that they are just like children of the earth, merely coexisting with nature and not trying to take dominance of it, as others before have.
Being promoted: Being promoted to Chief, since it is on the only real advancement within the faction, is a simple process. If the current chief chooses to step down and give up his title, he is given the right to choose who takes the seat next and casts the child's name into the crowd. If the crowd responds positively, it is agreed that the earth would accept that child to take the step up and become the chief. If the opposite happens, then it is obvious that the earth is rejecting the child and would find someone better suited. So, in a sense, it is a majority vote. If the one picked by the chief is rejected, the crowd begins to consider new options and comes up with a name to take the Chief's place, only giving the chief one choice.
